I have just upgraded my laptop from a 32bit windows 7 operating system to windows 8 64bit and now I cant install my AutoCAD 2010 software any ideas please. :(

You could use free Virtual machine software, such as VirtualBox, to host a 32-bit operating system inside of Windows 7 64 BIT. and install 32 BIT Autocad on it

YES..!! A BIG YES. Now Look its simple no Compatibility software needed LOOK. Open where the AUTOCAD 2010 setup Folder CD, then Open Setup.ini (Configuration File with some GEAR LIKE).
On the middle you will see:

Which version of AutoCAD are you trying to install?
I would suggest you to check the version in Windows Compatibility Center to see if it is compatible with Windows 8.1 or not.
If it is not compatible, you may try to install the program in Compatibility mode and check the results.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode.
a. Download the drivers from the Manufacturer’s website.
b. Right-click on the driver and click on properties.
c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box 'Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down.
d. Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.
